Schroon Lake
I got the idea to do a Travel Tuesdays while fighting asthma issues over the new year holiday. The concept being I would post a map of the Adirondack Park on Monday and allow followers of our Facebook and Instagram pages to tell us / suggest / vote for locations inside the Blue Line that they would like us to go explore.
We put all these suggestions into a 'random name picker' and take off and go to the place it randomly choses. Last week was our first one and Schroon Lake was the place chosen so we took off!
I had previously helped cater a fundraiser at Seagle Music Colony a few years ago but that was the extent of my knowledge of the area so I was excited to be able to visit a new Adirondack location and see what I could learn about the area.
We stopped at the Welcome To Schroon Lake sign and took the obligatory photos to start the journey off. That turned out to be more difficult than you'd think because my husband was trying to take my photo using my phone, which was difficult enough it seemed, but we were also trying to do a boomerang photo on Instagram and for whatever reason my phone was not having it. In addition to that, I hadn't eaten in about 5 hours and I was borderline hangry which is never good for anyone. Ever.
Once we took the above photo, we headed out to find a place to eat. Several places had been suggested, many of which were closed due to this being the off season, but thankfully, one of the suggested places to eat, Pitkins Restaurant, was open.
While we waited on our order we listened to the locals talk about the fire that just happened the week before and all but burned Schroon Lake Community Church to the ground. The locals say some people were walking by, I'm not sure if it was after school or work and noticed smoke and flames coming out of the building and walked into Pitkins, which is practically across the street and told them to call 911. Our waitress said the fire department evacuated everyone from the restaurant as well as all the other buildings in the immediate vicinity.
What was so sweet about her telling me that part of the story is due to the emergency evacuation, no one paid their bill. While she was genuinely concerned about the situation and wanting to be sure everyone was safe, she was also concerned and somewhat protective of the owner to be out the money for all the unpaid food that afternoon.
Doesn't every employer want an employee to look out for them like that? I was impressed and meeting her and eating at Pitkins was my favorite part of this day.
We decided to get dessert and I asked our server what her favorite dessert was. Just then a lady walked in, all of about 5 feet tall and said "Apple Pie", "Her favorite dessert is apple pie!" Our server giggled and said "She's right, it's apple pie", and quickly added "but all our desserts are good because we make them from scratch."
We ordered the applie pie and the chocolate mouse cake and learned that the lady that just walked in was the owner, Marie. What pistol she is! She sat down with us for a minute and told us that her father bought the Pitkins Restaurant when she was 5 years old and fourty-four years later she bought it from her father. She said "I don't know if I just love it this much or I'm not smart enough to leave", lol.
By the taste of the food - she loves it this much!
My husband asked her why they didn't change the name when her father bought it. "Because it was a good restaurant with a good reputation. There was no reason to distance ourselves, just continue the tradition of good food and bring our own spin to it." How can you not love that?
Turns out that Marie is ready to retire and so she's selling Pitkins. That information is for any of you reading this that would love to acquire a good business in the Adirondacks. (wink)
When we left Pitkins we walked across the street and took a quick video of the Schroon Lake Community Church. There are no words to how devastatingly sad it was to see.
From here we walked down to the lake and talked with a few ice fisherman who some were having good luck while others not so much. Regardless of their fishing luck they all had the right attitude. "I'm fishing in the Adirondacks on a Tuesday, who cares if the fish are biting!" He's got a point.
Based on another follower suggestion we stopped at Timberwolf for a drink. My husband Dave ordered a beer from Paradox Brewing, which was good that he got to try one since the brewery was closed.
I loved the old bar, I can only imagine how busy it must be during the summer months.
Flanagan's was open - but by this point we were stuffed. We'll definitely have to stop there next trip!
Because so many places were closed, we'll have to come back when they are open. Or maybe that's just an excuse to stop by Pitkins again, lol.
